Sisterhood Scribbles

Monica Steinman & Marcy Gray

Temple Beth Emet Sisterhood is the organization of the women of the congregation who come together in friendship for programs to benefit the Temple and the community, for social activities, for study, and above all, for growth of the individual so that each may find an opportunity to fulfill her potential as a person and as a Jewish woman. Sisterhood provides the arena for the individual to expand and grow in a Jewish atmosphere.

Temple Beth Emet Sisterhood has the pleasure of presenting a gift to each and every Bar and Bat Mitzvah child called to the Bema. Any member of Sisterhood is welcome to make the presentation if they wish to do so. Sisterhood also has a lovely Judaica Shop to help you with all your gift giving needs.

Summer 2007 has been a time for family and friends, fun and travel, relaxation and renewal for many people. The Sisterhood Board has also been busy as we met to plan an exciting year. Sisterhood is an energetic group of women who come together to assist the Temple, engage in fundraisers and enjoy Jewish life in the camaraderie of good friends. Whether you are new to Temple or a returning member, we welcome you and hope that you will choose to be an active participant in our Temple life. Remember, new Temple members receive the 1st year’s Sisterhood membership free and a complimentary copy of the Temple Beth Emet Sisterhood Cookbook.

Sisterhood will kick off the 2007-2008 year with our Welcome Back Breakfast. Watch your email and Temple notices for date and time. Then our Annual Paid-Up Membership Dinner is on October 2nd. As a bonus, we are adding Bunco to our evening’s festivities and expect a wonderful turnout. Do join us for a fun evening as we meet our new members and rekindle old friendships. As the year unfolds, we will continue our regularly scheduled activities. That includes our monthly Book Club where we meet at a member’s home, have dinner and engage in lively discussion of our chosen piece of literature. We’re in our fourth year and it’s been an activity that participants eagerly look forward to each month. We will be expanding Book Club this year to include some breakfast sessions at Temple also. The first of these Sunday Brunch & Book Club sessions will be in November, so watch the bulletin for more information. In addition, we will have our weekly Mah Jongg games, which are always open to newcomers and we look forward to seeing some new faces. Never played before? Not a problem...we will help you through the beginning stages of this fun, challenging game. We meet at the Temple at 7:00 pm the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month and at members’ homes the 2nd and 4th Wednesday. If you are interested in Book Club or Mah Jongg, please send your email address to Monica Steinman at steiny9584@aol.com to get weekly updates. Apples and Honey for Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah Gift Exchange, Party Showcase, Camp Expo, Passover Tasting, Gift Shop, Field Trips and so much more is in store for you as a Sisterhood member. If you have any questions you can contact Marcy Gray at marbilgray@aol.com or Monica Steinman at steiny9584@aol.com. We hope to see you on October 2nd and throughout the year. So do something for yourself and for your Temple this year, become a Sisterhood member!

Men's Club - Menschim

Steve Feldman

I hope everyone had a great summer far because school is about to begin. Over the summer, the men’s club had an outing at a Marlins game. We met for dinner prior to the game and had fun at the ballpark. I want to especially thank Tommy Mandel for organizing the event and in getting the tickets. I also want to thank Gary Chaiet for sending out notices for the event. I also want to thank all the men’s club members that attended the dinner and game. I know everyone had a great time and more is being planned. The next meeting of the men’s club is Wednesday night, August 22 at 7:00 pm in the social hall. Please mark your calendars. All temple men are urged to attend. With the High Holy days almost upon us, we need the assistance of all temple members. We need men’s club members to serve as greeters and ushers during the high holy days. We need to assign you dates and times for your participation and assistance. Keep the date of Saturday October 20, 2007 at 7:00pm. That will be the men's clubs first annual talent showcase and dinner at the temple. Try-outs for the talent show will be in September. More information to follow. We are planning a number of social activities (golfing, bowling, softball, poker, etc,), but we need your help with the temple’s open houses, hurricane preparation, and fundraisers. The men’s club will be raising money to build a baseball field and basketball court on the temple’s grounds. If you are interested in being active in the men’s club, please contact me at 954-540-8982 or at shfeld@bellsouth.net and I hope to see you at our next meeting.

Call the Temple office if you would like to be Hurricane Helper, play softball, help with the construction of the Sukkah, help with the Purim Carnival and be a part of the Men's Club. Learn how you can get more involved by contacting Steve Feldman.

Adult Education Information - 2007-2008

Noemi Gozlan, Education Director

Welcome to Temple Beth Emet’s Adult Education Program. We invite you to join us in exploring our religion, culture, and heritage. Our goal is to bring together, in meaningful dialogue, people of different backgrounds who have a common interest in Judaism. We believe that Judaism transcends the boundaries of time and place through continuous education. For a current brochure of our 2005 fall schedule click below.

“Get yourself a teacher; acquire a friend to study with you...”

Chavera Program Information

What is a Chavurah?
A Chavurah (Plural Chavurot) is a small group of families, couples, or individuals (usually about 10-20 adults) who share common interests and desire to meet together on regular basis to develop a personal Jewish community within the Temple Beth Emet Congregation. A Chavurah enables each group to share Jewish experiences in an "extended family" setting. It does not replace other events at the synagogue, on the contrary, they supplement and support the synagogues social, religious, and intellectual activities.

What does a Chavurah do?
A Chavurah group provides a place to express Jewish needs and celebrate Jewish belongings. Some Chavurot are essentially social groups, while others may concentrate more on study or other subjects of mutual interest. For example, the Chavurah group may wish to celebrate Jewish Holidays together. Another Chavurah group might like to have a family fun day each month. Some Chavurah groups might like to meet and discuss how current issues relate to Judaism or pick a subject of interest to all members and study that topic. Each group decides its own program based on its own needs.

Topics of Interest
Art ~ Sports: Golf, Basketball, Football, Bowling, Biking, other ~ Bikers ~ Adventure / Travel Food / Dining ~ Theater / Cinema ~ Music ~ Photography ~ Politics ~ Business network ~ Holiday Celebrations ~ Scrapbooking ~ etc..........

Why would I enjoy a Chavurah?
While its members remain active within the synagogue itself, each Chavurah offers the enrichment of their Judaic life. Each Chavurah is created to fulfill personal and family needs by helping people with similar interests to become a group.

How do I join a Chavurah group?
Participation in the Chavurah program is open to all Temple Beth Emet members. Generally, each Chavurah meets once a month. The activity/event, place, day, and time of the meeting is determined by the group. There is no Chavurah membership fee. If you are interested in starting or joining a new Chavurah related to any of the topics offered above, or any topic of your personal interest, please call Dani or Zohar at the Temple, 954-680-1882.

Joseph's Rainbow

The mission of Joseph's Rainbow is to provide hope, support and comfort to our temple family during challenging life experiences. Please share your talent with us. Do you own a restaurant and can provide a meal on an occasional basis? Do you enjoy cooking and could make dinner for a needy family? Are you a good listener and could provide encouragement? Do you enjoy praying for and with others? Do you have a professional expertise that could help another in a time of adversity?

If you have good organizational skills and enjoying working with others, please contact: Robin Freedman in the temple office 954-680-1882 or email her at
robinf@templebethemet.org and let her know what areas you can help with. You may also contact Debbie Milam for additional information.

The four areas where we need your support and team leaders are:
Meal Delivery
Sending Cards
Prayer Team
Resources for Encouragement

Remember, we are here to help temple members in times of need as well as members of the community. Thus far, we have been sending out cards remembering simchas, well wishes and sympathies. As always, donations are appreciated. When calling the Temple office please indicate that you would like a Joseph's Ranbow card sent to your loved one or friend. Funds raised by us will be used to help any of our own members during times of need such as illness, loss of a loved one or personal difficulties. We will provide food and assistance as needed. If you or someone you know needs assistance of any type, please contact either Rabbi Greenspon, Jay Nemes, and we will make arrangements to provide help. We are also available to do simple errands and have members available to provide transportation when needed should you temporarily not be able to drive. We are working with other organizations to provide social service counselors as needed. Again, we are here to help not only our own but also extended family and members of the community. In addition to sending out cards we have can provide Publix gift certificates to community members in need and visited with ill temple members.

Our plan for the High Holidays is to again have our Annual High Holiday Food Drive. We will be requesting that Temple Members and families remember those less fortunate and donate non perishable food items. Please come and check us out. We must all try to give a little something back to those less fortunate than ourselves. Together we can help our temple families find hope, comfort, and strength during the challenging times in their lives.
