What is a Chavurah?

A Chavurah (Plural Chavurot) is a small group of families, couples, or individuals (usually about 10-20 adults) who share common interests and desire to meet together on regular basis to develop a personal Jewish community within the Temple Beth Emet Congregation. A Chavurah enables each group to share Jewish experiences in an "extended family" setting. It does not replace other events at the synagogue, on the contrary, they supplement and support the synagogues social, religious, and intellectual activities.

What does a Chavurah do?

A Chavurah group provides a place to express Jewish needs and celebrate Jewish belongings. Some Chavurot are essentially social groups, while others may concentrate more on study or other subjects of mutual interest. For example, the Chavurah group may wish to celebrate Jewish Holidays together. Another Chavurah group might like to have a family fun day each month. Some Chavurah groups might like to meet and discuss how current issues relate to Judaism or pick a subject of interest to all members and study that topic. Each group decides its own program based on its own needs.

While its members remain active within the synagogue itself, each Chavurah offers the enrichment of their Judaic life. Each Chavurah is created to fulfill personal and family needs by helping people with similar interests to become a group.

How do I join a Chavurah group?

Participation in the Chavurah program is open to all Temple Beth Emet members. Generally, each Chavurah meets once a month. The activity/event, place, day, and time of the meeting is determined by the group. There is no Chavurah membership fee. If you are interested in starting or joining a new Chavurah related to any of the topics offered above, or any topic of your personal interest, please call the Temple office at 954-680-1882.
