Early Childhood Center

Where it's okay to draw outside the lines....

Sandy Sherman, Director

Robin Sheridan, Assistant Director

Mah Nishtanah…What makes our
school different from all other schools?

Our philosophy
Our enthusiasm for learning
Our emergent curriculum
Our love of children
Our NAEYC Accreditation
Our Amazing Playground
Our Children’s Resource Center
Our Gold Seal Award

We welcome you to Temple Beth Emet's Early Childhood Center.

Open the gate and step into the beautiful world of Temple Beth Emet Early Childhood Center. We would be delighted to give you a personalized tour of our school to show you how unique we really are.

Come shine in our light, and see our children flourish!

OUR PHILOSOPHY
Children are motivated to learn by their own curiosity about the world around them. We are committed to providing a developmentally appropriate program, with the help of motivated teachers, a variety of materials and equipment, and a low adult-to-child ratio. We engage children in an environment that is child-initiated and teacher supported.
OUR ENTHUSIASM FOR LEARNING
The love and excitement our teachers show the children each day are truly outstanding. We teach our children problem solving and peace making skills. At the same time we encourage discovery and exploration, enabling inquisitive minds to flourish. Our teachers are well trained in Early Childhood Education and development. All of our teachers are CPR and First Aid certified. We love learning too!

OUR CURRICULUM
Our most important goal is that the children leave our school with a feeling of self-worth and that “I can do it” feeling.
We help children feel comfortable in school, trust their environment, establish friendships and feel they are part of their classroom and school communities. We want each child to feel successful at his or her own developmental level.

We engage children in experiences that they can pride themselves on and build self confidence. We help them develop independence, self control, and a positive attitude towards learning.

We allow children to become confident learners by letting them experiment with their own ideas and experience success, and by helping them acquire the skills necessary for future learning, such as the ability to solve problems, ask questions, and use words to describe their ideas, observations and feelings.
We provide the children with opportunities to develop their large and small muscle coordination and to feel confident about what their bodies can do.

Our school provides an environment grounded in values. We instill in the children a love of Judaism and a curiosity about their roots. We practice the values and customs of our heritage through holiday celebrations and every day life.

Our curriculum is emergent. We believe that children learn best when they are highly interested in the subject matter. We therefore use themes that are flexible and take into account the interests of the children.

Children experience the joy of learning at their own pace...

Adonai Echad.....One God .........
We hold up our Shabbat “lights” as we sing with Rabbi

OUR LOVE OF CHILDREN
Not only do we give our children experiences in all areas of development, we also give them the encouragement and confidence to do so much with those experiences. We play with the children, observe their learning, and challenge them to reach for the stars!

“One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child." Carl Jung

ACCREDITATION
Our program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young children, the largest and most widely recognized accreditation organization for early childhood schools in the United States. When you chose a NAEYC accredited school for your child, you are guaranteed quality in all areas of the program.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
You are invited and encouraged to become involved in our school! We have an “open door policy,” and welcome your participation and your visits. Our wonderful Parent Teacher Organization (P.T.O.) raises money to provide special equipment and programs for the children, and also offers an opportunity for socialization among the parents. Each class has Room Parents who work closely with the teachers and the P.T.O.

OUR PLAYGROUND
Our Early Childhood Center is built around a beautiful playground which is divided into three sections. The sand, water, and art area is enjoyed by all ages. Our youngest children have equipment that is just the right size for their little bodies. The third section features a climbing wall, balance beam, fire truck, gas station, and several other pieces of climbing and riding equipment, which encourage motor development and imaginative play!

Fun Fun Fun

CHILDREN'S RESOURCE CENTER
Our beautiful new Children’s Resource Center has twelve computers, color coded keyboards, and over five hundred hard cover books displayed in adorable, child-friendly bookcases. Children spend time learning to use a library, and computer involvement is integrated into the curriculum in our older classes.

Learning

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST
Our Early Childhood Development Specialist acts as a resource for teachers and parents identifying challenges and providing solutions. We offer parenting workshops, observations, and individual parent conferences, all of which enable us to work closely with our families for the good of the children.

School Philosophy and Mission

Temple Beth Emet Day School was founded on the belief that children flourish intellectually in a caring and supportive environment. Through an holistic approach, which focuses on all aspects of growth – social, physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual – children, Grades K – 5th, discover and maximize their potential.

Class size is kept small and instruction is individualized in order to respond to each child’s interests and needs. Our integrated curriculum nurtures the students’ critical thinking, creative expression, and self esteem. General and Judaic studies are developed hand in hand, enabling children to build strong academic skills and an understanding of Jewish values and traditions.

The Mission of Temple Beth Emet Day School is built upon three Pillars:
Din for Righteousness and Dignity; Shalom for Peace and Spirituality; and Emet for endeavoring towards Excellence and Truth.

We are committed to developing a partnership between family, school, and community. We are dedicated to nurturing and stimulating our students to think critically, behave responsibly, and become life-long learners with a firm foundation in secular and Jewish learning.

Our Beliefs and Vision

Quality is our mission. Wholeness is our philosophy.
At Beth Emet Day School our Education Builds Mind, Body and Soul.

We are an educational institute that:
· Is personal and committed to the individual student.
· Is committed to creating an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect.
· Is committed to educational excellence.
· Is committed to the Jewish family, its growth, development and enhancement.
· Develops spirituality, not only “rituality.”
· Encourages acts of Tzedakah for the general community as well as the Jewish community.
· Instills American, Israeli, and Jewish pride.
· Stresses Ahavat Yisrael, the love of the land of Israel and the Jewish people.
· Is open and committed to Jewish diversity and intellectual freedom.
· Is committed to provide a dedicated faculty and staff to facilitate an exciting atmosphere where children will have the unique opportunity to think, feel, explore, and create.

General Studies

Temple Beth Emet Day School provides a supportive and trusting environment which enables each student to gain confidence, grow and take risks. Our learning environment stimulates and challenges children to develop and enhance the academic skills, leadership skills, and character values, necessary to succeed beyond our school and in life.

By integrating the development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills the Language Arts program ensures that all students have the opportunities and resources to develop the language skills they need to pursue their academic professional and personal goals. The program also seeks to develop in students a love of language, reading, and writing that will be a source of pleasure for them throughout their lifetimes.

At Temple Beth Emet we accomplish many of our goals using a Balanced Literacy approach. This method allows us to integrate all the areas of Language arts on a daily basis. Using a balanced literacy approach gives us the opportunity to be flexible to meet the individual needs in each student’s learning profile.

In accordance with our philosophy of teaching to the individual child, Accelerated Reader has been incorporated into our Language Arts curriculum. This program enables students to learn and progress at their own personal pace. Through Accelerated Reader, students have the opportunity to select texts at their level, and then proceed to go online for quizzes on various components of the text such as comprehension, literacy, and vocabulary. An online database maintains each student’s records and keeps track his/her progress. In addition, we have a reading reinforcement program that provides students with a small group instructional setting, where they work on mastery of fluency and reading comprehension skills.

Texts used in Language Arts include the following:
Rigby Literacy (K-2), Harcourt Brace Trophies Reading (3-5), Houghton Mifflin (Grammar), Elements of Reading (Vocabulary), Zaner Bloser Spelling Connections, and Zaner Bloser Manuscript and Cursive Handwriting.

Mathematics permeates all facets of life and is an integral part of our everyday learning. At the younger levels, the investigation and construction of mathematical ideas are facilitated by each child’s interaction with manipulative materials on a daily basis. This enables students to discover for themselves mathematical concepts, and how to apply them in daily life. Students explore concepts, then practice and apply skills, reinforcing concepts through problem solving as well.

Our math curriculum is comprehensive at all grade levels, and designed to help build conceptual understanding, skill proficiency, problem solving facility, and logical reasoning. It provides thorough coverage of state and national standards, and allows teachers the flexibility to customize the program.

Texts used in the Mathematics program include Harcourt Math, as well as supplemental material.

Science is a systematic investigation of the ever-changing world around us. The study of science enables students to develop skills and learn methods of scientific inquiry including observation, prediction, measurement, estimation, experimentation, classification, formulating hypotheses, interpreting data, drawing conclusions, developing models, and communication, to derive specific concepts or ideas. These concepts become the basis for further exploration of our scientific world. Students actively construct ideas through their own inquiries, investigations, and analyses, and gain an understanding of scientific topics through hands-on experiments. At each grade level there are physical science, life science, and earth science units that are often connected to other subject areas.

Texts used in the science program include Harcourt Brace Science and Full Options Science System (FOSS Kits).

Social Studies education helps students acquire the historical perspective to appreciate their roots and understand modern society. It fosters respect for the dignity and worth of all people, loyalty to democratic ideals, and the skills necessary to accept the right and responsibilities of citizens. Through the Social Studies curriculum, students learn to integrate significant facts, concepts, and generalizations from history into their own experiences. Derech Eretz, making the world a better place for all to live, is a central theme in all social studies teaching at Temple Beth Emet, and as students increase their knowledge of world history, they develop an awareness and appreciation of ethnic and cultural differences, and become capable of connecting personal experiences to people of other cultures.

Texts used in the social studies program include Harcourt Horizons, as well as supplemental material to add depth of understanding.

Hebrew & Judaic Studies
In Jewish Studies, we not only focus on providing knowledge, understanding, and skills, but also, on the students’ commitment, values, and behavior. Jewish life will be taught and experienced in school through holiday observances, Israel education, Jewish life cycle events and customs, Torah studies, and prayers.
For Hebrew Language Arts, we have adopted the TalAM curriculum, which is based on the principles of communicative-heritage language acquisition, the development of Jewish concepts and values, and reading and writing skills. Starting at the second grade, students will have the opportunity to try out for a Hebrew Spelling Bee team and participate in the tri-county Hebrew Spelling Bee.

Chess
Chess is introduced into the curriculum by CCS – Cornwall Chess Services – South Florida’s leading organization for scholastic chess training. Playing chess facilitates the development of mental skills by sharpening analytical thinking, increasing concentration and expanding the imagination. The students will learn to develop a competitive spirit, practice patience, and experience mistake making and problem solving. Starting at the kindergarten level, students will have the opportunity to participate in chess tournaments.

Physical Education/Sports/Swimming
Our physical education program focuses on a variety of progressive and developmentally appropriate learning experiences, through which students will develop motor skills, movement concepts, and health related fitness, providing a foundation of physical activity that will pave the way to a healthy lifestyle.
Our sports program is led by Playball, an educationally based program with positive coaching methods that actively incorporates the development of life skills alongside sport skills and team sports. In addition, students enjoy a semester of instructional swimming, utilizing teaching techniques that ensure they have fun while learning water safety and swimming skills. For our intermediate and advanced students we also focus on water safety, while improving their swimming skills and endurance.

Art Appreciation
Art studies encourage self-expression through projects that strengthen conceptual and emotional development. Through theoretical and practical application, students are introduced to the great masters, while focusing on techniques, elements, and principles of design. This hands-on introduction to art history, aesthetics, appreciation, and production, in addition to aesthetic conversations about art and artists, enables students to value their own original ideas, and recognize there are many avenues for artistic expression.

Rhythm, Dance & Song
The rhythm and dance program consists of a blend of traditional and modern concepts. Students will work on coordination, timing, and balance, as well as team work and self expression. Through our song program, students will learn a variety of pieces – from songs of Israel that tell of the land and history, to pop culture music.

Music Appreciation
The world of music is one that encourages imagination, creativity, individuality, and discipline. Our music appreciation program encompasses various areas of study, from guided listening to classical pieces, to recognition of notes and rhythms. Students will expand their music related vocabulary, experience playing on various instruments, and develop a musical outlook that will accompany them throughout their lives.

Spanish
The Spanish program aims at opening the world of a new language through early exposure, while students’ learning capabilities are at their best. The curriculum, Aprendo Espanol, is designed to involve students in the learning process of the Spanish language in a fun way, following the see-listen technique, which engages children’s natural ability to learn languages.

Technology
Our technology curriculum, implemented through the Futurekids program, is designed to teach computer mastery skills. Through the use of various child oriented themes and software, the goal is to provide students with practical computer literacy and computer mastery training in a challenging academic environment. The curriculum is based on hands-on experience with a focus on students learning how to use the computer by creating practical projects using a variety of computer application software (from Kid Pix and Word Processing to MS Office and Internet).

Family Programs, Shabbat Services & Temple Events
Family programs and Shabbat Services are part of Day School curriculum enrichment. Their significance is rooted not only in the practice of tradition, but further in the value of bringing together of the entire family, and allowing the parents an opportunity to glimpse into their children’s world and share their learning experience.

Field Trips
Field trips are an integral part of the curriculum and serve to introduce, enrich or reinforce subjects taught in class. Students will be transported in an air conditioned school bus with seat belts, unless otherwise noted.

After School Programs
For your convenience, our school offers a variety of optional afternoon enrichment programs, which vary from semester to semester. Examples of offered courses include: Visual Art & Filmmaking, MindLab, Karate, Soccer, and Chess.

Religious School

Noemi Gozlan, Education Director

Religious School

There are currently over 500 children enrolled in our Religious School.  Our school meets either one, two or three days a week, depending on the student's grade level and chosen track. Our children begin their formal training in the 3rd grade, and normally become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah during the 7th grade. Although we celebrate an average of 80 to 90 B'nai Mitzvah each year, the Temple is still able to offer an individual Bar or Bat Mitzvah to each child. Students are taught Jewish history, literature, ethics and Hebrew. In addition, classes meet periodically for more informal educational experiences, such as Shahbat dinners, retreats, and family education programs.

Judaica High School

Older children and post-Bar and Bat Mitzvah students are encouraged to participate in Judaica High School. They may either attend a cooperative program with other synagogues at the J.C.C. through the Office of Jewish Education, or our Tikun Olam Confirmation Program here at our Temple.

The PTO has great plans for a fabulous year with lots of fun activities and special events for your children. Please save the date for KidStock Musicfest 2007 on October 21, 2007. More details will be coming soon. This will be one event you don't want to miss!

If you are interested in getting involved, we would love to have you! Lots of jobs for everyone both big and small. Please contact Lisa Mutzman at mutzman@msn.com or Sheryl Katz at zedkatz@hotmail.com to volunteer. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Who we are:
The Temple Beth Emet PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) began when the Temple first opened its school many years ago. The years have seen the PTO grow into a vibrant dynamic organization dedicated to improving the school for our children. As the school has grown, so has the PTO’s ability to provide assistance and activities to the children. PTO is open to all parents of children enrolled in the ECC and the Day School.

The PTO is a success because of all the wonderful parent volunteers who devote their energy and their time to making Temple Beth Emet the best educational facility that it can be. We encourage all parents to become an active part of the PTO. It is a great opportunity to make some new friends and really make a difference in your child’s school experience.

Our mission:
The mission of the PTO is threefold: one is to provide fun activities for our children that enrich their ECC/Day School experience. Some activities include: the Hanukkah/Latke party at Hanukkah, a Thanksgiving Feast, the Matzo Munch during Passover, and Hamantaschen at Purim. We have a terrific Pajama party with all children and even some parents dressed in their favorite jammies. An entertainer keeps us singing and laughing, then we enjoy a ‘bedtime’ snack before going home to get tucked in. One of the children’s favorite events is our WinterFest. Tons of snow are brought in as we transform the field area into a winter wonderland. Our Annual New Year’s Eve parties are a huge hit, where families come to ring in the new year a few hours early. Dinner, decorations, dancing, face painting, balloon art, and a ‘countdown to midnight’ are all part of the fun.

Our second mission is fundraising. The PTO undertakes many events with the purpose of raising money to better our school for all of our children. Our fundraisers include two book fairs per school year, school pictures, the pizza and challah clubs, Sally Foster Wrapping Paper Sale, the Hanukkah and Mother’s/Father’s Day Shopping Sprees, and our biggest fundraiser has been our annual Dinner Dance and auction event. We continue to surpass our goals each year, and have thus far raised over $100,000 for our school. The funds that are raised are used to purchase equipment, supplies and toys. Over the past 5 years the PTO’s fundraisers have: purchased books, supplies, computers and equipment for the Children’s Resource Center, purchased and installed shade covers on the playground and re-surfaced the entire playground area. PTO has also purchased many of the outside toys to enhance the playground atmosphere. Additionally, the PTO has donated funds towards the new Day School playground, which all of the bigger kids are thoroughly enjoying.

Thirdly, the PTO provides support and assistance to the teachers. We recognize that the teachers are what truly make TBE the incredible place that it is. PTO volunteers assist in the classrooms to lend a helping hand. We provide Teacher Appreciation Breakfasts to honor our teachers and the PTO has worked to provide our teachers with a place to relax and take a break.

Mitzvot:
To complement the teachings of our school, the PTO also encourages mitzvah projects throughout the year. Collecting food for those in need during the Thanksgiving season reminds us all of how fortunate we are, and helps to instill the value of helping in our children.

A portion of the proceeds from our 2006 Holiday Boutique was donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Our second annual Thanksgiving Mitzvah Project in 2006 collected more food than we could have imagined. We even needed a moving truck to get all the food delivered to the W.E. C.A.R.E. food pantry and to Children’s Home Society. Parents and children responded in such an incredibly generous manner, we were all so touched and the recipients of this food were truly overwhelmed.

At our spring 2006 Dinner Dance and Auction, the PTO partnered with Circle of Love of South Florida. We provided their organization with financial support, so they can continue their good work to help children with cancer.

Camp Beth Emet

Joel & Sandy Lazarus - Camp Directors
Robin Sheridan - Lower Camp Director (2-4)

Can you guess what has two legs, a smiling face, rauch (spirit) and is full of excitement? A Camp Beth Emet camper. We have designed a camp program for children ages 2-13 that will allow them to grow as individuals and as jews, while having loads of fun.

At Camp Beth Emet our primary focus is your child. Within the nurturing, secure, and creative environment of our camp program, your child will grow both socially and physically while relating to others and to their jewish heritage.

An all NEW and EXPANDED activity program awaits your child. Each program has been specifically planned to meet the growth skills and ability of your camper.

Our “Summer of Wonder” begins with our professional staff. We think of ourselves as a “camp family” and every staff member is carefully selected and extremely qualified. We are also proud of our low counselor/camper ratio that assures your child’s safety, happiness and development.

Camp Beth Emet celebrates Shabbat every Friday, selecting our campers to be abbas and eemahs as they lead us in the traditional Shabbat blessings.

Let us help you introduce your child to the beauty and wonder of the world. Give them a summer filled with precious memories.

Camp Beth Emet is an exciting summer experience for children ages 2 to 12 years. Children may attend this wonderful program from one to eight weeks.

Junior Camp ( ages 2 - 3 )
Your preschooler's first camp experience should be happy and memorable. They will experience camp within a loving and creative environment. Our campers stay at the Temple enjoying planned, hands-on activities with a developmental approach. Age appropriate programs will develop your camper socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. Tumbling, dance, creative movement, music, arts & crafts, play-acting, water-play, Shabbat celebrations, and surprise visitors & programs are planned throughout the summer. But most of all -- your child will have FUN!
Intermediate Camp ( ages 4 - 6 )
Our nurturing, fun-filled and unique program keeps our 4-6 year old group happy all summer. They'll look forward to bowling, movies, gymnastics ceramics, swimming, live theatre & puppet shows, and age appropriate sports. Special fun-filled half-day excursions" will be highlighted throughout the summer. Other activities that await your camper are dancing, arts & crafts, music, bike rallies, treasure hunts, sidewalk art, rug skating, science & nature, indoor & outdoor sports and games, and our very own Penny Cup Carnival. Shabbat and Judaic themes are also celebrated throughout the summer. Back by popular demand, we will have CBE Color War and Parent Camp Day. BUT ... that's not all. LIT's ( 13 year olds)
The L.I.T. (Leadership in Training) program is the first level in the transition from camper to counselor. Designed for the mature camper, the teen group combines independence with advanced activities. L.I.T.'s receive valuable on the job training. This experience increases the L.I.T.'s self-esteem, sense of responsibility and sensitivity towards the needs of others. L.I.T.'s who complete one summer of L.I.T. training will be given priority for a counselor position the following summer.
